Universal credit: regular and substantial caring responsibilities

You are considered to have ‘regular and substantial caring responsibilities’ for a severely disabled person if you regularly spend at least 35 hours a week caring for a person who receives one of the following benefits:

  • disability living allowance or child disability payment care component at the middle or highest rate;

  • attendance allowance;

  • personal independence payment or adult disability payment daily living component;

  • constant attendance allowance (of £75.50 a week or more) paid with the Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes; or

  • armed forces independence payment.

You must not be in full-time education. You must not receive any earnings for your caring responsibilities.
