Committee to inquire into ESA and WCA

The Work and Pensions Select Committee is to do a follow up enquiry into Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Work Capability Assessments (WCA).
In light of recent developments in this area, including the publication of a number of reviews of the WCA, expressions of concern from DWP regarding Atos’s performance in delivering the WCA, and the introduction of mandatory reconsideration, the Committee has decided to undertake an inquiry into ESA and WCAs to follow-up its 2011 report.

The Government urgently needs to address the underfunding of adult social care to relieve pressure on A&E departments, says the Health Committee in its report on winter planning in A&E departments.
The MPs say that unless the shortfall in social care provision is addressed, people will continue to face avoidable admission and delayed discharge from hospital.
DWP agrees to set target for benefit underpayments

The Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee, Frank Field MP, has welcomed the DWP's change of heart on a target for benefit underpayments.
In its December 2015 report on benefit delivery, the Committee recommended that the DWP should introduce a target to reduce underpayments to less than 0.5% per cent of expenditure by the end of this Parliament.
However, in its response to the report the Government rejected this recommendation.

Public Accounts Committee publishes report into Adult social care in England, as Sixth Report of Session 2014-15.
The Public Accounts Committee report finds that the Government’s agenda to change and improve adult social care, most notably through the Care Act, is rightly ambitious. However, the Committee simply does not know whether the care system has the capacity to become more efficient and spend less while continuing to absorb this increasing need for care. It notes:
