Political under-representation
Only 8 out of 650 MPs identify as Disabled, even though 1 in 5 working-age adults in the UK are Disabled. Our politics isn’t representative. There is no research on the political participation of Disabled people, but we know those with a disability face many barriers to voting and standing for office. The introduction of Voter ID will also exacerbate these barriers.
The re-introduction of funding schemes to support Disabled candidates is essential, as is a halt to all policies which will further disenfranchise Disabled voters.
