DR UK statement on the new Government

We urge the new Government, as it moves away from a hard focus on deficit reduction, to invest in disabled people’s full participation in society.

Cuts to independent living support have hit disabled people very hard - and are a false economy. If people are isolated because of no support to get out of bed or out of the house, if there is no support to get into college or work – then some people are simply locked out of society and its opportunities. Then the whole of society suffers – it misses out on people’s talents and contributions.

It doesn’t need to be that way. We want, quite simply, investment in the support that we know works, to enable everyone to participate in our communities, our schools and colleges, our workplaces. That would benefit individuals living with disability or health conditions, our families, our communities and the UK as a whole.
