Last week, Transport Minister Simon Lightwood visited Blackpool following the £4 million announcement of investment in local transport services. He spoke to DR UK Transport Policy Adviser Stephen Brookes.

The investment is part of the Plan for Change – a £1 billion commitment to improving bus services and infrastructure across England, including nearly £38 million to introduce 319 new zero-emission buses. The investment aims to restore pride in our public transport network and enable disabled people to travel with dignity and ease.

The meeting on a Blackpool Bus on the Promenade with Stephen Brookes MBE – of Disability Rights UK, who is a regular user of Blackpool Transport buses and trams, highlighted the critical importance of ensuring that our transport system is inclusive and accessible to all, with farer fares and better journey support.  He spoke about the need for enhanced and consistent training for bus drivers to enable them to confidently and respectfully provide a service to passengers with disabilities, as well as ensuring the importance of clearly marked and respected access spaces and priority seating.

As he said to the Minister “If you get it right for Disabled people , you get it right for everybody.”
