We have a number of Benefits courses designed to expand your knowledge in the area.

Benefits Overview Course

We are running Benefits Overview Courses on  21st January 2020 and 18th March 2020 in London.

Our Benefits Overview Course is aimed at professionals who work in advice or advocacy who need to know more about - or need a refresher on - changes to welfare benefits and social security. It is interactive – with practical exercises and plenty of time for discussion – and is ideal for advice workers, social workers, support workers and anyone else supporting clients with social security benefits.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand how the benefits system is structured and the differences between contributory, non-contributory and means-tested benefits
  • Know who can claim each of the benefits which make up the system
  • Have an awareness of common issues affecting people when claiming health and disability benefits
  • Have explored the Work Capability Assessment and the disability conditions in Personal Independence Payment
  • Understand how ongoing reforms are affecting disabled people
  • Know how packages of entitlements can be claimed together
  • Be able to complete basic benefit checks to ensure people are claiming their likely entitlements
  • Be able to give basic advice up to the stage of challenging a benefit entitlement decision

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Course

Our next PIP course is on 12th December 2019 in London

This course examines the structure of PIP and the assessment process. It enables participants to identify potential entitlement and help claimants make the most effective applications. It is for staff working with working age people who are affected by a health condition or a disability. No previous experience is required although a working knowledge of the wider benefits system is helpful.

Course objectives

By the end of the course you will:

  • Understand the eligibility conditions for PIP;
  • Know how Disability Living Allowance claimants are affected by PIP;
  • Have studied and feel confident with the disability criteria;
  • Understand the assessment process;
  • Be able to confidently complete the assessment form and help people prepare for a medical assessment;
  • Be able to initiate appeals and give basic advice on the appeals process;
  • Have an awareness of how PIP affects other benefits;

Disability and Carer's Benefits Course

Our next Disability and Carer's Benefits course is on 26th February 2020.

This course looks at the main disability benefits that are claimed in respect of adults and children affected by a health problem or a disability. It also considers the main benefits issues which typically affect carers.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the different types of health and disability related benefits which can be claimed in respect of adults and children;
  • Know which benefit to claim and when;
  • Have gained an understanding of the assessment criteria used within Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Attendance Allowance;
  • Be able to successfully facilitate claims on behalf of people affected by a disability and/or their carer;
  • Know how to tackle application forms effectively;
  • Be able to maximise income for people affected by a health problem/disability and their carers;
  • Be able to give basic advice on the process of mandatory reconsideration and appeal;
  • Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.

The course is suitable for people who support and advise peopel with long term health conditions and disabilities and their carers.

Preparing for a Court Tribunal Course

Our next course Preparing for a Court Tribunal Course is on 23rd April 2020.

This course examines the process of preparing a client for a first-tier Tribunal and provides a thorough grounding in how to construct an effective written submission when working on a PIP or ESA case.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the legal framework that underpins the decision making and appeals system;
  • Understand the Tribunal Procedure Rules;
  • Be able to assess a DWP submission;
  • Know when and how to get further evidence;
  • Be able to find relevant legislation and case law in support of an appeal;
  • Have explored tactics including negotiating with the DWP before the appeal hearing;
  • Be able to construct a written submission to the Tribunal;
  • Be able to describe what people should expect to happen on the day of the appeal hearing including who will be present and their roles;
  • Understand what happens after the appeal hearing and when there may be grounds to appeal to the Upper Tribunal;
  • Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.
