Expanding into some wider counties.

Our champions are shaking off the cobwebs of early January and getting some direction in the new year. For instance, our Manchester section are meeting tomorrow to discuss plans for the new year, including some rather exciting developments – more information to follow.

Otherwise we’ve been planning and delivering induction days for new champions, and getting ready for a couple of meetings of our own in Bristol on the 30th of January. Speaking of those attending please see below a photo of Charlotte White, our new Bristol champion who will be participating in the meetings with us.

Also normally as a rule we don’t ask or look for champions to represent rural areas. The reason for this is simple: We’re not sure if it’s going to be worth our time or a potential champion's time too. Although if a young person with a disability who is 18-29 makes a strong case that there are opportunities that are worth their time and ours then we’re happy to accept them as a champion. We have one champion in this position who we’re hoping to do some good things with, Stuart Rayfield who represents Canterbury & Maidstone. Stuart may also be providing initial championing in the Surrey area, as Surrey Council have expressed an interest in working with us.

We’ve also had really positive responses from a number of other councils, including South Norfolk, where we await our first Champion.

So if you are 18-29, have a disability or health condition and live in Norfolk (particularly Kings Lynn, West Norfolk or South Norfolk), the South East or any of our other target areas and want to help to improve the career prospects of yourself and other young disabled people, then please get in touch with us on 0207 250 8193 or via leo.capella@disabilityrightsuk.org
