Unfortunately, we can’t link this update to any unofficial YouTube videos of a certain song by The Proclaimers! Even though it’s a campaigners’ anthem, our funder, Comic Relief (who earn money through a charity single of said song) might cut our funding if we tried!

Our Champion for Bristol: Charlotte White making a great speech at the Work and Health Think Tank event. We’d love more people with disabilities to join her in Bristol.

Given the distance covered this week, this sums up the kind of week that we’ve had, as our staff have been in action, in tandem with our Champions, in South West and Northern England.

On Monday, Leo Capella and Anna Denham went to Bristol to speak at the Work and Health think tank event with our Champion for Bristol, Charlotte White. Charlotte gave an excellent speech on the project. Our talk was well received and was filmed as part of the event. It will be put on the Bristol Health Partners YouTube Channel.

Afterwards we held interesting discussions with officials from Bristol City Council, and South Glos and North Somerset Councils. We hope to work closely with these councils in future and are grateful for their interest in our work.

We would like to thank Bristol Health Partners and Bristol City Council for their invitation and immaculate co-operation with us both prior to and during Monday’s event.

On Wednesday Anna took to the rails again, this time to meet with officials from Darlington Borough Council as well as our champion Jonathan Mears. They had an interesting meeting and we’re grateful to Darlington Borough Council for their invitation and the opportunities we will explore with them.

Also a brief reminder that our new champion for Liverpool, Hannah Ross, will be part of a panel this Friday for the 42 Bedford Row Disability Law Essay Prize-Giving Ceremony in Oxford. This is a competition for students at the University of Oxford and appropriately enough this year’s question is: “How should the law protect the right of persons with disabilities to just and favourable conditions of work, on an equal basis with others, including equal remuneration for work of equal value?”

So all in all a lot of activity across England and there’s still more to come particularly with meetings with Leeds, Knowsley and Leicester City Councils in the near future. A lot more miles to cover, which is why we’re still looking for more champions to join us!

So if you are 18-29, have a disability or health condition and live in Manchester, Norfolk, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire, Bristol or any of our other target areas and want to help to improve the career prospects of yourself and other young disabled people, then please get in touch with us on 0207 250 8193 or via leo.capella@disabilityrightsuk.org
