Inclusive Practice in Careers Provision: How to improve careers education, information, advice and guidance for young disabled people

Disability Rights UK’s Disability Skills Unit would like to thank all our speakers and delegates for making this such a successful, interesting and informative event.

Our attendees included career advisors and education professionals as well as, disabled young people, parents, DPO’s and other providers/services.

Jan Pinkerton

Jan Pinkerton opened with a presentation on the Careers and Enterprise Company, discussing the benefits and resources available to employers by challenging the status quo and contributing to a fair and equal society. Download the Presentation Here.

Damilola Benbow

Damilola Benbow from Ambitious About Autism spoke about young people with autism having the opportunity to have meaningful work experience and access to high quality education beyond the age of 16. Damilola introduced their MyVoice campaign for 16 to 23 year-olds, helping them to secure formal internships and support them in the workplace. This campaign helps to fight prevailing stereotypes by offering a more positive and realistic message around autism. Download the Presentation here

Louisa Futcher

Louisa Futcher, a young person involved in the MyVoice campaign and Ambitious About Autism spoke of her personal experiences of autism as a student at university and a part time job. 

 Helen Joy

Helen Joy from Talentino Careers discussed enterprising ways to improve working experience for young people. In 2016, 55 local employers were working with Talentino on the programme. Helen also discussed Talentino Career’s relationship with Brookfield school. Download the Presentation here.

As a former careers adviser Hilary Nickell from Career Companion explored the various excellent resources available online, sharing his expertise as a curator of information and from his role as Project Director at Career Companion. View Presentation

Maurice George

Maurice George, the assistant head at Brookfields School, described the school’s pathway to employment and their successful relationship with Talentino Careers. They promote Careers at every level, including classroom based coaching sessions, business enterprise and work experience. Download Part 1 & Part 2 here. 

Atif Choudhury and Adam Hyland

Atif Choudhury and Adam Hyland from Diversity and Ability (DnA) gave a presentation on types of discrimination, challenging attitudes relating to disability and how to address the cause of inequity by removing the systematic barriers. View presentation
