 Universal Credit starts today

Disability Rights UK welcome a simplified benefits system but are very concerned that the introduction of universal credit will make families and disabled people worse off - particularly due to the cuts to the child disability additions and to the Severe Disability Premium. Despite the intention of Universal Credit to make work pay, the changes could make it harder for disabled people to remain in work. The new benefit is not fit for purpose and not ready – the pilots will only look at single people meaning that many of the crucial issues for families have not and will still not have been ironed out in time for its full introduction.
