Disability Rights UK Factsheet F69

Your feedback wanted

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have recently launched their new ‘Tell Us About Your Care’ partnerships with a number of national charities, of which Disability Rights UK is one. This involves Disability Rights UK gathering feedback from disabled people about their experiences of using health and social care services. The CQC would welcome feedback on your experience of using any of the services they regulate. Please click here to do so.

The Independent Living Fund (ILF) was a Government funded discretionary scheme, which helped people who had both day and night care needs and who were getting the high rate care component of Disability Living Allowance. Those helped under the scheme were able to receive a joint ILF/local authoity funded care support package to help them live independently in the community rather than in residential care.

The UK-wide Independent Living Fund (ILF) has now been closed since 1 July 2015. This factsheet briefly outlines the support which replaces it for those who previously received help from the ILF.

If you live in England

Your local authority is now responsible for your care provision and all assessments, rather than the ILF.

If you live in Scotland

You can get help from a new Scottish Independent Living Fund from ILF Scotland. This is for people who were on the old ILF UK. For more information see http://ilf.scot/

On 29 June 2017, the Minister for Public Health and Sport, Aileen Campbell MSP, announced details of a new ILF Scheme, which will initially focus on supporting transitions for young disabled people, aged 16 to 21. For more information see http://ilf.scot/

If you live in Wales

The Welsh Independent Living Grant replaced the Independent Living Fund in Wales, as a temporary measure, until the end of March 2018.

Independent Living Grant funding will continue during 2018/2019 but, during this period, local councils will meet with the people receiving them to discuss the replacement support they need.

By 31 March 2020 all recipients will receive their support from local councils.

If you live in Northern Ireland

You will get help under a new replacement Independent Living Fund administered through ILF Scotland. For more information on this see www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/independent-living-fund and http://ilf.scot/
