The number of cases of disability hate crime prosecuted in court has plunged by nearly 40% in just one year, new figures from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have revealed.
There appears to have been a sharp fall in the number of cases referred to prosecutors by police forces. It is the third year in a row that the number of disability hate crime prosecutions has fallen steeply.
DR UK’s Kamran Mallick said: “Reports of hate crimes to the police continue to rise, but prosecutions are falling. It is disingenuous of the CPS to trumpet figures showing an increase in the allowance of hate crime to be a prosecutable factor, when the numbers of crimes reaching the prosecution stage is so low.”
