DR UK has made a written submission to The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee inquiry into the economics of Universal Credit.

The Committee will examine whether Universal Credit is meeting its original objectives and whether the policy assumptions reflected in its design are appropriate for different groups of claimants.

It will also examine the extent to which Universal Credit meets the needs of claimants in today’s labour market and changing world of work.

The 2010 White Paper ‘Universal Credit: Welfare That Works’ set out the aims of UC (UC) as follows:

  • to simplify the benefits system;
  • to make work pay; and
  • to combat worklessness and poverty.

In our submission, DR UK responds to the question - How well has Universal Credit met these three original objectives in relation to disabled people?
