Improving disability and disaster preparedness in London

Inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction in London in line with article 11 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

There has never been a more pertinent time for the issue of disaster preparedness and the inclusion of disabled people in plans to be taken more seriously. There are over 12.2 million People with Disabilities in the UK of which 1.4 million live in London. London as a capital city is at risk of terrorist attacks, weather related disasters and epidemics all of which could differentially affect People with Disabilities.

Otibho Edeke-Agbareh recently undertook research for a Master’s degree at University College London by interviewing people who actively work for governmental/ NGOs with a focus on disability and disaster preparedness in London. Her findings were submitted to the UNCRPD during their committee review of the UK’s compliance to the Convention in 2017.
