A Meeting of Minds at I Can Make It Exchange!

31 March 2017

I Can Make It Exchange took place at our offices in East London on Monday 27th March.

As well as a list of key speakers and attendees from local authorities from across England, ten of our Champions were also in attendance, a great turn out. Speakers included James Butler from Social Enterprise UK; Anne Lythgoe of Salford City Council and the Social Audit Network, Hugh Chamberlain from Johnson and Johnson, and Helen Higgs from EDF. We also held workshops on how to apply social value to open new job opportunities for young people with disabilities. The three topics were: the refurbishment of Parliament; the additional £2bn allocated to social care in the recent Spring Budget; and the construction of Hinkley Point C.

So, all in all an informative event that was useful and worthwhile to all attendees: a great example of a meaningful and productive exchange. We’d like to express our thanks to everyone who participated and made the event such a success. A fuller report of the event, including notes and actions, will follow to all attendees shortly.

And there’s more to come from I Can Make It. Next week our champions for Manchester will be attending a meeting with the head of commercial procurement in Manchester City Council in the morning and the mayor of Salford in the afternoon. And we’ve got some exciting opportunities forming both in Bristol and Darlington so watch this space!

However, we’re looking for more champions to join our existing ones, particularly in Liverpool, Bradford, Nottingham and Bristol.

So, if you are 18-29, have a disability or health condition and live in any of those areas, or any of our other target areas and want to help to improve the career prospects of yourself and other young people with disabilities and health conditions, then please get in touch with us on 0207 250 8193 or via leo.capella@disabilityrightsuk.org
