This new online course is aimed at professionals who work in advice or advocacy who need to know more about - or need a refresher on - changes to welfare benefits and social security. It is ideal for advice workers, social workers, support workers and anyone else supporting clients with social security benefits.

Don’t know your UC from your PIP? Confused by the range of benefits and tax credits?

This online course will be delivered in partnership with the Benefits Training Company. It will be run 'live' in two parts over consecutive days. It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and case studies, group discussion and games. Participants will be provided with e-learning supporting material including PowerPoint slides and a comprehensive training pack.

  • Part 1: The structure of the system and the importance of health & disability benefits - Tuesday 1 September 9.45 - 12.45

  • Part 2: Universal Credit, the wider benefits system and maximising income - Wednesday 2 September 9.45 - 12.45

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand how the benefits system is structured and the differences between contributory, non-contributory and means tested benefits
  • Know who can claim each of the benefits which make up the system
  • Be able to help people claim a work related benefit when they cannot work due to a health condition or a disability
  • Be able to help people of all ages claim a disability benefit when their every day lives are affected by a health condition or a disability
  • Understand who should claim Universal Credit
  • Be aware of how a claim to Universal Credit affects other benefits in the wider system
  • Be able to complete a basic benefits check to ensure people are claiming their likely entitlements
  • Be able to get calculations done
  • Know how to check that a decision is correct and what to do if it is not.

Please note this course is not for individual claimants.

You will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. You may also wish to have a pen and paper to make notes.
