“Second class citizens”? The personal impact of the public debate on benefits
The latest Who Benefits? research shows just how damaging the current debate about benefit is and how it urgently needs to change.
The research shows that, as result of being on benefits and the debate around benefits:
- 15% (or almost 800,000 people) had experienced verbal abuse
- 4% (or over 200,000 people) had experienced physical abuse
- 38% (or over 2 million people) said their confidence and self-esteem had been affected
- 16% (or almost 850,000 people) have been refused by landlords or letting agents
- 18% (or over 950,000 people) have been treated less favourably by potential employers
